Spider and Jeanne have been selected from over 300 nominees to appear at this year's US National Book Festival.
The 2006 National Book Festival, organized and sponsored by the Library of Congress and hosted by First Lady Laura Bush, will be held on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006. Approximately 100,000 booklovers attended the 2005 Festival, which took place on Sept. 24, 2005.
More than 300 qualified authors, illustrators and poets were nominated to participate in the 2005 National Book Festival; approximately 80 were selected. We anticipate a similar situation in 2006, and plan to make the initial announcement of participants in early July.
Individual 25-30 minute presentations and one-hour book signings are the heart of the National Book Festival experience, which is designed to celebrate the joy of reading by bringing readers together with their favorite writers and illustrators. There are no panel discussions, workshops, or trade exhibits. The presentations are personal talks, and-except for the Poetry Pavilion---not straight "readings." As part of their talks, however, we encourage presenters to discuss and/or read excerpts from their most recent book-which is sold and signed at the Festival.
Participants will be invited to two social events: a black-tie dinner and program at the Library of Congress on Friday evening, Sept. 29, and the Festival "kick-off" breakfast on Saturday morning, Sept. 30.
